Our Statement in Support of Racial Justice

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”
— Dr. Angela Y. Davis

The Vision of Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara is: empowered girls in an equitable society. An equitable society incorporates racial justice as well as gender justice: a truly equitable society demands justice on every axis, across every aspect of oppression. This is our work. This is our vision. This is what we do.

The girls we serve are bright, capable, and resourceful. They are all individuals with different experiences, lives, and backgrounds, but all of them have one simple thing in common: they all want to have hope. They all want to imagine, and work for, a bright future for themselves; they all want to grow up to take their place in a world that has room for them.

It is our job—as an organization, and as a community—to help give them that hope, to help make room for them, to do all we can to make those bright futures possible. Racial justice is vital to that work.

The girls we serve are advocates: for themselves, and for others who experience oppression whose lives are different from theirs. We must ‘have their backs’; we must do all we can to affirm and support them, we must do all we can to help the hope that lies at the center of their advocacy to grow and flourish.

We stand in solidarity with the girls we serve. We stand in solidarity with those protesting against racial injustice. We stand in solidarity with all who envision an equitable society, and with all who hope for a brighter and more equitable future.
