We couldn’t do what we do without the help and support of our generous community volunteers.
Each year Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara relies on community volunteers to help fulfill its mission of inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold. We seek people who share our vision for a future where girls use their voices to confidently overcome the challenges of gender bias and stereotypes so they may grow up healthy, educated, and economically independent leaders in our community, free from gender inequity, harassment, and violence.
If empowering girls to fulfill their highest potential motivates you, check out the many ongoing commitments and short-term projects below. Please contact Mel Dase with questions and to register for one (or more!) of our opportunities.
The following are just some of the volunteer opportunities available this year.
NEW – Fall 2017! BOOST Program Mentor: Academic mentor-volunteers are needed to work with 1st-2nd grade girls through the BOOST tutoring program. Volunteers work 1:1 with girls for 10 weeks to provide a supportive and focused environment for “boosting” academic, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. BOOST aims to increase a girl’s confidence and build a “can-do” attitude through consistent support (learn more). Prior work with youth education is a plus, though most important is patience and a positive attitude. Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30. Minimum 10-week commitment, ideally continuing throughout the school year. A 10-week commitment is required. Volunteers must complete an application, attend an orientation, and provide proof of a negative TB test.
Homework Helpers & Tutors: Volunteers are needed at both the Santa Barbara and Goleta Valley Centers to work with girls to encourage them to complete their homework. Shifts are flexible Monday through Thursday, from 5PM-6PM. A minimum 20-week commitment is required, ideally continuing throughout the school year. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one set hour per week for a 10-week semester.
Volunteers are needed throughout the year to support various fundraising events, such as the Scholarship Event in the spring, the Celebration Luncheon in the fall, as well as other community events throughout the year.
We need volunteers for several special events throughout the year, including:
She.Is.Beautiful 5K and 10K Race: We need 60-100 volunteers to help support this inspiring and empowering race, proceeds from which benefit Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara. Multiple roles needed. Contact Mel Dase for additional details. The 2018 race is on September 22. This is a one-time commitment.
Science Fair: Each center hosts an annual Science Fair in the spring, and science-savvy volunteers are needed to help the girls explore and reach new heights in science.
Thanksgiving Dinner: Each Center hosts a Thanksgiving Dinner in November for the girls and their families. This is a wonderful opportunity to get the holiday season started right for families in our community.
Winter Stage Performance: Each Center performs an annual play/musical and volunteers are needed two days a week from September – December to help with staging, costuming, sets, running lines, and all the fun (and work) involved in the magic of theater!
Volunteer help is needed for the annual Gymnastics Meet in March-April and Performance Showcase events in the spring and fall. For more information or to volunteer, contact the Gymnastics Center at (805) 963-4492.
