Santa Barbara is feeling Royal MANIA as newly planted Santa Barbara residents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcome their daughter Lilibet Diana to the world. As part of their announcement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex encouraged friend, fans, and supporters to celebrate Lili’s arrival by supporting a few organizations that are near and dear to them – Girls Inc. just happen to be listed first, and for good reason.
First and foremost, The Duchess of Sussex is the personification of our STRONG, SMART, and BOLD mission, as she has a long history of standing up for girls and women, and leveling the playing field wherever she could. While her work in this field started at the age of 11 when she publicly called out sexist advertising from Proctor & Gamble, she never stopped fighting for a better future for women and girls around the globe.
As an ambassador for World Vision, the Duchess advocated for access to clean water and sanitation knowing that the retrieval of water and family care that came from poor sanitation were often burdens placed on girls and women, removing them from accessing an education. She has also worked with the United Nations’ UN Women’s initiative which has the ambitious goal of achieving gender equality by 2030, and has most recently risen her voice alongside famous Feminist Gloria Steinem to lift the importance of women running for elected positions and getting to the polls.
She and Prince Harry are two incredible humanitarians, and we look forward to continuing to help them make the world a more equitable place through our work here at Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara.
