Planting Seeds of Achievement in Girls

SHARE

A self-proclaimed bibliophile, Zora is a driving force behind creating and funding a library at the Santa Barbara Center. The concept: to provide easy, on-site access to books to promote literacy, improve reading confidence, and inspire curiosity about what is possible for girls. The center’s library shelves are filled with books featuring “sheroes,” girls and women who have overcome obstacles to accomplish great things.

It has also been important to Zora to facilitate connections to the Santa Barbara Public Library by encouraging girls to participate in the Summer Reading Club and the Reading Ambassadors program, a program in which Girls Inc. 3rd and 4th graders are trained to read aloud to younger children. This partnership has helped inspire a new generation of storytellers and listeners at Girls Inc.

Zora and her husband, Les, have included the Girls Inc. Santa Barbara Center library in their estate plan so that books remain easily accessible for girls and Girls Inc. programs for future generations. Donors Focus Passions for Libraries to Support Girls Inc.

If you give girls access to books, they will gravitate toward them. By providing girls a wealth of reading opportunities, we are planting seeds and watering them. When stories broaden girls’ perspectives, their lives are enriched by a vision of what they might achieve.
