Our Program

Gwyn Lurie

Social Justice Activist | Child Welfare Advocate | Screenwriter | Journalist | and CEO, Montecito Journal Media Group

Gwyn Lurie began her career as a journalist for ABC Network News in New York. She spent time in Managua, Nicaragua as a freelance reporter, and was a producer on the award-winning documentary “Voices From the Attic” about her family’s years in hiding during the holocaust.

Gwyn worked as a Production Executive for 20th Century Fox Night at the Movies and at Interscope Entertainment before becoming a screenwriter. She is a credited writer on the 2016 feature film “Nine Lives” starring Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner and she co-adapted the Oliver Sacks story, “The Last Hippie”, which became “The Music Never Stopped” starring JK Simmonds (Sundance opening selection, 2010). Additionally, she adapted for screen Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “The BFG” and has written for almost every major motion picture studio.

Gwyn has been an active member of the Montecito Community since moving here full-time with her family in 2009.  She completed two terms as an elected member of the Montecito Union School Board, which she chaired for five years, and is a founding board member of the Partnership for Resilient Communities – a public-private partnership created after the January 2018 debris flow to help keep Montecito safe from future disasters.

Most recently, Gwyn co-chaired the Santa Barbara Human Rights Watch Committee. She received her BA at UCLA where she served as student body president and was awarded a Truman Scholarship. In graduate school at Oxford University, she studied international affairs as a Newton Tatum Scholar.

Gwyn is currently the CEO of Montecito Journal Media Group and Editor-in-Chief of the Montecito Journal.
