Who are we?

Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara is a 501(c)(3) organization that has served the Santa Barbara, Goleta, Isla Vista, and Montecito communities since 1955. We are an affiliate of the national youth organization Girls Inc. a research, education and direct advocacy organization that inspires all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold.

What programs and services do we provide?

Girls Inc. provides vital after-school and summer educational and enrichment programs to all girls ages 4 ½ – 18, to help them develop the values and skills they need to grow up healthy, educated and independent, so they become confident, productive and responsible adults. Our programs and activities are offered at our Santa Barbara and Goleta Centers, and at offsite locations. We also provide a multifaceted Gymnastics Program.

What makes Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara unique?

Girls Inc. programming:

  • Is comprehensive, including programs that are developmentally appropriate across all age groups between 4 1/2 and 18 years of age.

  • Is intentionally focused on gender equity, inspiring girls to be strong, smart & bold, and key issues related to girls issues and needs, rather than general youth

  • Is based on high-quality, longitudinal, national evaluation research, in addition to local evaluation of program quality.

  • Is delivered by professionally-trained facilitators, rather than volunteers who may not have the time or the training to provide impactful instruction.

  • Includes role modeling and mentoring as key components, where staff and older girls connect with younger girls, providing a sisterhood of support, high expectations, shared drive and mutual respect.

When are programs offered?

Our after-school program is offered from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the school year, and our summer adventure program is offered during the summer from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Please see the “Programs” tab for more details and specific starting dates.

Where we are located?

Our Santa Barbara Center is located at: 531 E. Ortega Street, Santa Barbara CA 93103 (Administrative offices and Gymnasium is located on the Santa Barbara Center campus).

Our Goleta Valley Center is located at: 4973 Hollister Avenue, Goleta CA 93111.

Why does Girls Inc. only serve girls?

The all-girl programming allows girls to plunge into activities without worrying about whether they “belong” or not – or whether they are more, or less skilled than boys. Gender-specific programming lets girls focus on their real interests, at their own pace, free from distractions and comparisons.

How can I get my daughter involved with Girls Inc.?

Parents can enroll their daughter(s) in a program by downloading the appropriate enrollment/registration form(s) from the web site, or by contacting our administrative office and/or Centers and filling out the necessary forms. What is the cost of your program?

Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara has several programs including Afterschool and Summer Programs, as well as a variety of Gymnastics Programs. What is your Gymnastics Program?

In addition to recreational gymnastics included in our after school curriculum, we offer a separate community gymnastics program which features competitive training, open gym, gymnastic camps and private lessons. Programs are offered in our 5,000 sq. ft. gymnasium—one of the best gymnastic facilities in California, at a child to gym coach ratio of 6:1. Girls and boys ages 2-18 have the opportunity to participate in a variety of skill level classes from beginner to advanced.

What are the qualifications of your center staff?

Many of our program staff have degrees, or are pursuing degrees in such fields as elementary education, psychology, sociology, dramatic arts, biology, sports and recreation.  All staff meet or exceed state licensing requirements and receive extensive training throughout their employment, focusing on cognitive, emotional and physical child development, with a specific emphasis on girls’ needs, behavior guidance.  Further training is provided to enhance facilitation skills, curriculum writing and implementation, and program evaluation.
