We couldn’t do what we do without the help and support of our generous community volunteers—Get involved today!
Each year Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara has hundreds of volunteers who help us fulfill our mission of inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold. We seek people for ongoing commitments and short-term projects. The following are just some of the volunteer opportunities available this year.
Reading Ambassadors (2016):Beginning October 4 (SBC) and October 10 (GVC). Third and fourth grade girls practice their read-aloud training and skills with volunteers during the after-school program. Girls would benefit from volunteers who represent a group (sports team, business, etc.) who could speak to the girls about what they do/represent. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 3-5 visits.
iRead (2016):Beginning September 14 (GVC) and September 15 (SBC). First and second graders who benefit from additional practice read to volunteers in order to improve their skills and increase their confidence. A weekly commitment is required.
Homework Helpers & Tutors: Volunteers are needed at both the Santa Barbara and Goleta centers to work one-on-one with girls to encourage them to complete their homework and lend a hand when needed. Shifts are flexible Monday through Thursday, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one set hour per week for a 10-week semester.
Volunteers are needed throughout the year to support various fundraising events, such as the 100-Committee Gala in the spring, She-Is-Beautiful 5k & 10k run in September, the Celebration Luncheon in October and other community events.
We need volunteers for several special events at the Santa Barbara and Goleta centers throughout the year, including:
Science Fair: Each center hosts an annual Science Fair in March, and science-savvy volunteers are needed to help the girls explore and reach new heights in science.
Thanksgiving Dinners: Each center hosts a Thanksgiving Dinner in November for the girls and their families. This is a wonderful opportunity to get the holiday season started right for families in our community.
Winter Stage Performance: Each center stages an annual play and volunteers are needed two days a week from September – December to help with staging, costuming, sets, running lines, and all the fun (and work) involved in the magic of theater.
Volunteer help is needed for the annual Gymnastics Meet in March-April and Performance Showcase events in May and November. For more information or to volunteer, contact the Gymnastics Center at (805) 963-4492 or email@example.com.
